Wade ends Taylor's unbeaten run in Belfast

JAMES WADE inflicted Phil Taylor's first Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts defeat of 2009 with a superb 8-4 win.

Wade became the first ever player to defeat Taylor in the tournament in week one last year, and repeated the feat with a classy display at Belfast's Odyssey Arena.

The world number two reeled off seven successive legs to claim his first win of the campaign a week ago, and was similarly impressive in week four.

Taylor, who had not been defeated in 26 games since the end of November, crucially missed four darts at the double to level at 3-3, which proved costly in the final outcome.

Taylor won just two of the next six legs as Wade wrapped up the win, which was sealed with a stylish 138 finish.

"James was the better man," admitted Taylor. He held his throw well and I couldn't break back. I missed some doubles but I'll be back."

Wade landed a 180 in setting up a finish in the opening leg, before Taylor replied on double 12 to level.

Taylor landed a maximum of his own in the third, only to miss the bullseye to break throw as double seven edged Wade 2-1 up.

Another 180 helped Taylor to the fourth leg, only for a second missed bullseye to again be punished in the next by a double ten from Wade.

Wade secured the game's first break of throw in the sixth leg, with four missed darts at double top and ten from Taylor allowing him to move two legs clear.

A further miss at double top from Taylor proved costly in the seventh as Wade took out double two, before a 13-darter saw the 14-time World Champion reduce the gap to 5-3.

The duo traded maximums in leg nine before double top put Wade three legs clear once more, with Taylor replying on double 16 before Wade ensured a minimum of a draw with double 12 putting him 7-4 up.

Taylor missed the bullseye to take the next, giving Wade his shot for victory - which he clinically despatched with a 138 checkout on double nine.

"You know when you play Phil what you have to do and I did the job," said Wade. "I'm over the moon with an 8-4 win, it's brilliant.

"If I'd missed the 138 I think he would have come back for a draw.

"It wasn't the start I thought I'd have got but these two games have shown what I can do and I'll hopefully continue my success from here."

Wade storms to Ricoh Arena win over van Barneveld

JAMES WADE stormed to his first victory in the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts with an 8-4 comeback win over Raymond van Barneveld in Coventry.

Wade, last year's Premier League runner-up, had made a poor start to the competition with a draw in the opening week and an 8-1 loss to Mervyn King in Edinburgh.

He trailed the Dutchman 4-1 in Coventry and seemed set for another loss, only to produce a stunning run of seven successive legs in taking the win.

Van Barneveld took the game's opening leg at ease, and then landed a fine 11-darter against the throw to double his lead.

He then landed a 180 on his way to the third leg, before Wade got off the mark by taking out 68 for the fourth.
javascript:void(0)
A second maximum of the night helped van Barneveld into a 4-1 advantage - but a double three finish in the sixth sparked Wade into life.

He returned from the break to trade 180s with the Dutchman before breaking throw with a 95 checkout, and then levelled on double ten with a 13-darter.

Another 13-darter, against the throw, put him ahead for the first time in the contest, and a fine 11-darter, finishing with a 100 checkout, was followed by a double top finish to take him 7-4 up.

His second 11-darter of the game, featuring a fifth maximum, saw Wade wrap up his first victory of the campaign.

"I've wanted to do that for a while so it's very pleasing for me," said Wade. "Last week was a kick up the backside and hopefully this is the start of things to come.

"The crowd were brilliant and they were good for me - and I hope I entertained them and they enjoyed it.

"I've got the passion and love for the game back again and I'm over the moon to get the win. I averaged 120 for the last six legs and not many players could live with that.

"I felt like a spare part in the last two weeks and was playing really badly but I feel a part of the Premier League now and I've got to try and keep my feet on the ground now."

Surrey v Hampshire Report - Alex Brindley

Hampshire finally had something to smile about after their 22-14 win against local rivals Surrey, in the latest match of the BICC Premier League on 14th/15th February.

Saturday’s games saw the B-sides take to the stage. Both teams have struggled as of late, but produced an excellent performance to gain a 9-3 win for the Men and a 3-3 draw for the Ladies. The games were played in a cracking atmosphere, and it was really good to see all the players get behind each other and produce the kind of darts that everyone knows they are capable of.

Gemma Hayter got things started for the Ladies team, with another accomplished 3-1 win and 18.25 average. Carole Shiner also won 3-1 with a 16.13, before Pennie Lewis stepped up to take her game 3-0 with an excellent Match Award winning 21.17 average. Despite a 180 with her first three darts, Nikki Stevens went down 3-1, as did Mandy Keith and Jane Monaghan.

The Men’s team won their first five matches courtesy of Ricky Williams 3-2 (24.78), Paul Scutt 3-1 (22.53), Paul Reidy 3-1 (23.76) and Dave Bonnett 3-2 (22.32). Men’s Captain, Kev Ede marked his 50th Consecutive appearance for the County with a 3-0 win and 26.84 average. Further wins followed from a very determined Kev Murrell 3-0 (23.86) and from Phil Harty 3-2 (24.51), before two excellent games from Jason Cook 3-1 (27.69) and Match Award Winner Graham Hardy 3-1 (28.87) who hit two 180s and legs of 18,15 & 18 darts.

An overnight score of 12-6 in Hampshire’s favour meant that some of the pressure was lifted from the A sides shoulders for the games on Sunday. However, Surrey did not make things easy, and Hampshire did well to get a 7-5 result for the Men and 3-3 draw for the Ladies.

The Ladies A definitely knew they had a game on their hands when Elaine Harty (18.88) and Maria Agozzino (19.01) both lost to opponents with 20+ averages. Wendy Reinstadtler 3-1 (20.67) and Sue Smee 3-0 (18.56) then steadied things before Sue Lowther was unlucky to lose 3-2 (17.83). With the Score at 3-2 to Surrey, Steph Smee came up against ex-Hampshire player Laura Turner. Both players produced a great game of darts before Steph triumphed 3-2 with a 21.96 Match Award winning average, to give the Ladies their draw.

In the Men’s A side, Nillson Pritchard got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win and 25.47 average, followed by Rick Lowther 3-1 (26.20). Dennis Murrell then stepped up to take the Match Award with a suburb 3-1 win and 31.33 average, hitting three 180s and winning legs of 15,14 and 16 darts. The next few games saw Danny Smith having double trouble, leaving him disappointed with a 3-1 loss and 24.20 average, Andy Mitchell winning 3-1 with a 28.84 average, and Roy Brown winning 3-0 with a 28.90.
Graham Huggett played well in the next game, hitting a 25.69 average, but came up against their Man of the Match and lost 3-0, while Mark Smith left us all on the edge of our seats, nearly letting things slip after being two nil up against another ex-Hampshire player in Aaron turner, but managed to win 3-2 with a 25.25 average. Losses followed from Mick Cookman (25.06) and Steve Musson (25.26) before Danny Ballard secured the team win after beating another Hampshire ex in Alan Yates, 3-2 with a 25.41 average.

All in all a satisfying result for Hampshire which sees them still sitting 5th in the overall league. Unfortunately, other results could have been better for us. The Ladies A remain top of their respective table. The next game is against Essex on 7th/8th March, and here’s hoping the team can carry on and build on the great result it has just had.
One last thing, for all those of you on Facebook, check out and join the Hampshire County darts page – great write up on the games by young Gemma Hayter and lots of familiar faces.
Photograph shows Dennis Murrell reciving his 'A' Team player of the match award for a tremendous 31.33 average from Chris Wilcox - Hampshire President and Martin Cullip of Surrey

Wade bows down to the King in Edinburgh

MERVYN KING continued his mightily impressive Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts debut campaign with an 8-1 rout of world number two James Wade.

King followed up an 8-1 win over Wayne Mardle in the opening week with another superb display to remain unbeaten at the top of the table.

While Wade was below-par in a draw with John Part a week earlier, he was given little chance by King, who averaged 104 and restricted his opponent to just three darts at a double in the game.

King hit double eight to win the first leg against the darts, and back-to-back 13-darters saw him take a commanding 3-0 lead.

He then landed a 180 in a 12-dart leg to move 4-0 up and repeated the feat in taking the fifth, before double ten put him into the break with a 6-0 advantage.

Wade took out double 12 to win the next and get off the mark, but King pulled clear to take out double eight in the next and a 7-1 cushion.

He then sealed the win with another 13-darter, hitting double 12 to make it two stylish wins from as many games.

"People are now starting to see the real Mervyn but there's still more in the tank," said King. "Hopefully that's going to come out.

"I've been working hard over the last two years and it's now starting to come."

"Tonight was good. James is a great player but he hasn't been at his best for a while, that wasn't the real him on stage and I took full advantage and punished him."

Wade Opens Premier League with a draw

JOHN PART shared the spoils with 2008 runner-up James Wade in the opening game of the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts.

The Canadian snatched a point in the deciding leg of the game, punished missed doubles from Wade to earn himself the draw.

Part had led 2-0 after taking the first leg against the darts and hitting a 180 and a bullseye finish in the second.

Wade hit back to win the third on the bull, before Part hit a second maximum and double eight to lead 3-1.

Wade took the next three legs on his favoured double top to hit the front, and after Part levelled the left-hander took the next two for a 6-4 cushion.

But missed doubles continued to dog the youngster as Part drew level once more - only for the Canadian to suffer from three wasted chances in the next as Wade earned a point on double ten.

Wade, though, gave himself two darts for victory on a 98 finish in the 14th leg, but missed two darts at double 19 and Part took out double 16 for the draw.

"I got lucky with a point but I didn't play how I can," said Wade. "I haven't played how I can for six months, and six months ago I'd have easily walked away with a win there.

"But I didn't and I'm grateful to have got a point. John let me off a bit to be honest.

"It felt a bit foreign to be back on the Premier League stage! I've got to learn again and hopefully there will be plenty of wins to come."

Hampshire v Kent Inter County Fixture report

Hampshire v Kent British Inter-County Fixture

Hampshire welcomed Kent to Hill Park Memorial Club on 17th/18th January, for the latest fixture in the BICC Premier League calendar. After the disappointing result against Oxfordshire, the Hampshire players were hoping to put in a good performance against their latest rivals, but it was always going to be a tough game , with Kent having won the last two meetings 25-14 and 22-17.

Saturday’s games saw the B sides take to the stage. Carole Shinar was welcomed into the Ladies team but was unable to get off the mark with a win. Carole was not alone in defeat, and the Ladies were left disappointed after missed doubles saw them on the wrong end of a 5-1 score line. Gemma Hayter was the sole winner, and claimed her second Lady of the Match award, in only her second game, with a 3-1 win and 17.24 average.
The Men’s side were also unable to register a team win, losing out 7-5 to their opponents. Mark Thorne 3-2 (22.56), Paul Scutt 3-1 (24.25), Ricky Williams 3-2 (23.03) and Dave Bonnett 3-1 (20.60) all secured wins, but the Man of the Match award went to Troy Butler for his 3-1 win and 24.25 average. Paul Reidy made his debut for the side, but found that missed doubles cost him his match, and Kev Murrell was unlucky to come up against their match award winner.

With the score standing at 12-6 to Kent overnight, Sundays A teams were hoping to pull things around. However, it was one of those days where the Kent players seemed not to be missing anything, particularly in their Mens side.
The Ladies had a hard task against a team containing two England internationals, but they showed just why they are top of the Ladies table after grinding out a 3-3 draw. Wins came from Sue Lowther 3-0 (15.49), Sue Smee 3-2 (18.47) and Match Award winner Wendy Reinstadtler. Wendy beat England player Sally Dowell 3-2 with a 20.89 average. Maria Agozzino was unlucky to lose 3-0 despite being on a double each time, and Elaine Harty was unlucky to come up against a very in-form Tricia Wright
Although the Men’s A side suffered the same fate as their B teammates, going down 7-5, the result could have easily gone the other way. Danny Ballard, Nillson Pritchard, Danny Smith and Mark Smith all played excellent, but found that their opponents were just not missing their finishes. Those who did win their games were Rick Lowther 3-2 (26.97), Colin Philpott 3-1 (23.62), Graham Huggett 3-0 (23.86), Andy Mitchell 3-1 (26.11) and Match Award winner Roy Brown with a 3-0 win and 29.47 average.

The overall score at the end of the weekend was 25-14 to Kent, but could have been so much closer. With such good players, Hampshire just need that that little bit of luck to go their way for a change to spark the confidence again and bring the team back to winning ways.
Hampshire remain 5th in the Premier table with their next game Away to Surrey on 14th/15th February.

Wade out in Purfleet semi-final

ROBERT THORNTON reached his first major PDC final at the coral.co.uk Players Championship with a 13-10 victory over James Wade.

The Scot continued his impressive charge up the Order of Merit by making a televised decider within a year of joining the PDC, bettering his semi-final appearance in the European Championship.

Thornton fell 8-6 down before stepping on the gas with some consistent high scoring to win seven of the next nine legs to record victory.

The Scotsman started the match well with a 15-darter before capitalising on three misses from Wade to break in the second.

World number two Wade stormed back to take the next three legs, including his first maximum of the game in the third leg in getting off the mark.

He followed that with a superb 151 checkout to level and hit a two-dart 60 finish to lead for the first time in the game at 3-2.

The reigning UK Open champion let four opportunities for a 4-2 lead slip and Thornton managed to land double five to break back and square the game.

The next two legs where shared before Wade broke his opponent's throw with a clinical 111 checkout, and then converted a 110 finish to open a gap at 6-4.

Thornton won the 11th leg and had an opportunity to level at six-all, but his attempt at double top for a 114 finish was off-target and Wade landed double eight to keep his advantage.

Thornton, a semi-finalist in the European Championship last November, won the next leg in 13 darts, but Wade went into an 8-6 lead by converting an 84 finish on the bullseye.

Wade missed a dart at double 11 which would have given him a 9-6 lead and Thornton managed to land tops to keep in touch.

The man from Stevenston then converted checkouts of 74 and 150 - despite maximums from Wade in both legs - to move 9-8 up and lead the match for the first time since the second leg.

Thornton was now in full cry and landed two maximums in the process of taking the 18th leg in 11 darts, followed by a two-dart 65 finish to move two legs away from victory.

Wade hit double ten to win his first leg in six to reduce the deficit to 11-9, but Thornton won the next in 13 darts to break throw and move a leg away from the final.

Wade broke the Scotsman's throw with a 14-darter, but Thornton hit his sixth 180 of the game in the next leg and followed that with a two-dart 60 finish to defeat the UK Open champion.

"I missed a few doubles early on and the first half of the match was scrappy but the second half went in my favour," said Thornton.

"James is one of the best players in the world but he didn't have a good second half.

"When I went two legs down and knew I had to pull it back. I'm like a back habit, I keep coming back and I hit him at the right time."
